When booting in safe mode, generic windows drivers are loaded. In normal mode, all the specific hardware drivers and startup applications are loaded. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is find the faulty hardware and software. It may simply be too much crap loading at startup! What would cause my computer to only work when i start in the safe/networking mode?
Do you have a virus scanner. If not try iobit.com and download that free scanner then scan computer for viruses. Defragment your computer; Start, accessories, system tools defragment. You can also go to start run type in msconfig start up programs and uncheck everything that is checked, then restart computer. What would cause my computer to only work when i start in the safe/networking mode?
Could be a virus, or could be a driver problem. If a virus scan doesn't find the culprit, try disabling all drivers, then re-enable them, one at a time, and see how the computer works each time. When the computer stops working normally once again, the driver you just re-enabled is the one that causes the problem. (It's possible that you may have 2 redundant drivers for the same device, or 2 conflicting drivers, in which case eliminating either one of the 2 conflicting drivers would fix the problem. But it's more likely that only a single driver is causing the problem.)
There's also a remote chance that it could be a glitched-up registry. A broken registry is obvious by the fact that every time you change settings in Control Panel (like your display settings, for example), the settings revert to the way they used to be, each time you restart your computer.
Another possible cause of trouble is having a nearly full hard drive, though Windows warns you when the amount of space remaining is really low.
