What do you think is essential in any social networking websites?

for eg: what do people look out in social networking website such as Facebook, Myspace or Orkut etc...and why do people invest so much time in these sites.....

this is just an query that i have in my mind...so no offence to anybodyWhat do you think is essential in any social networking websites?
A number of reasons (I'm guessing):

1. They have a natural urge to 'belong', and are unable to do that physically with a group.

2. Keeping up to date with friends lifes, without having to actually directly communcate with them.

3. To avoid boredom at work / Because it passes the time.

4. To ego massage themselves, by letting everyone know how busy they are (which is supposed to translate into them being very important in the general fabric of society).

5. Because learning or any sort of education is generally boring, compared to contributing to pointless topics of conversation.

6. Because they want to be loved.

7. Because they love themselves more than anyone else.

8. Because other friends are using it and they don't want to feel left out - a mild sort of pier pressure.

Those are a few of the reasons I can think of, off the top of my head.

And I am a facebook user, but normally only access it when I want to share media with SPECIFIC people%26gt; Furthermore I have a stupid requirement that if I don't see the person 'in the flesh' at least every 6 months, I don't accept their friendship. Of course if they're hot they're excluded from the rule.

I hope that helps...or not! What do you think is essential in any social networking websites?
The essential thing is keeping in touch with friends at any time of the day but it can become too addictive for some people. Personally I think these sites are quite silly because you can have countless people as "friends" who you don't really know, this is a danger to the younger users. What do you think is essential in any social networking websites?
Because it's an easy and convenient way of keeping in touch with your friends and people from your past who you would never otherwise be able to see. I think the main thing about it is that it performs on all levels - from the closest intimacy to the greatest vagueness (what with privacy settings, emails, public postings, etc.)
IT'S CRAP.

that's all you need to know about those sites.
