What are the effects of social networking on teens?

My names Rhea and I'm a student producing a dissertation on the effects of social networking on teens between the ages of 13 to 17.

I could do with some opinions on what you all think?

For example;

If you think social networking is good or bad?

If you have any stories of it effect the work/educational life of yourself or someone you know?

If your a parent and have a child who is addicted to a networking sites?

If your a networking site user and you love it and why?

Basically anything you think maybe helpful.

Any information you can provide would be really appreciated...What are the effects of social networking on teens?
it's fine. i am a teen and most definitely NOT addicted to msn and yahoo answers.

i do not have Facebook so i cannot comment on that subject.

i think as long as we are careful and don't add anyone we don't know, it's fine! i think that some people, on the other hand - not just teens - can be VERY addicted and not be able to communicate any other way! so it's good to be able to talk to friends and answer questions about people's problems and/or just general questions as long as people so it in moderation.
Social networking sites lead to social lethargy.

It's a form of pseudo fame. I have witnessed people who become addicted to gaining "friends". The more friends the happier they become. But are they friends at all? Or are they simply electronic "fans" of an individual who craves popularity?

Get "friends" by only lifting a finger or two. Why bother learning civility, manners, responsibility, and other social virtues? They can can stay home to make and interact with their "friends" all while in the most deplorable conditions of personal hygiene and using atrocious verbal skills.

In the end there is relatively little "social" in the networking sites. Reality shows them to be little more than personalized blogging sites for people attempting to promote their life to some degree of popularity.

I personally do not recommend such sites and discourage their use. Instead I suggest learning interpersonal skills by leaving the computer at home and going into the real world. What are the effects of social networking on teens?
For the most part, I think social networking is good but the bad does exist. It could be an excellent way to connect with friends and family and networking of course.

I was introduced to a site that is just like facebook without all of the junk. With facebook having 500,000,000 million, you better believe it is not going anywhere but we have to start making wiser choices about what we post... Especially when it comes down to our children.

Here is a new social networking site without all of the junk.. It is like a private community that does sell your personal information and keeps out all of the pervs...

The ideas that the computers are making people worse off are antiquated because they didn't have any idea what the internet would bring. Now instead of secluding themselves they can be exposed to cultures that they normally wouldn't have met in their natural habitat. Having said that, Clyde turned to the dope after chatting on the irc channels, and later the suicide from being so high on the weed. If only someone had warned us.What are the effects of social networking on teens?
I think that it is too addicting. Once a day is probably as much as I SHOULD go on but I usually end up going on it about 3-4 times a day (I am 13).

It is helpful to know what people are doing and to connect with people (I like that). But I think that if people don't have anything actually important to say.....then your time is somewhat wasted. Hope this helped!
You will end up wearing really thick glasses and get hairy palms. Come on, the question is a bit open and all answers will be peoples opinions. There are no real answers to this question im afraid.
